Zoo

Yeah, this is the second straight movie I’ve reviewed that features horse love… Maybe I should get some Ron Howard flicks next time round. So… this is a movie about bestiality. Scratch that, this is more a movie inspired by bestiality. No graphics, no insights. If you want an organized, informative film on the subject matter, do not check this film out.

Zoo is closest to an Errol Morris film, its all Phillip Glassish music, voice-over (though here its cryptic rather than straight-forward), and dream-like recreations. I hesitate to call this a beautiful film — its often mesmerizing, but one can’t help but think that potentially the mystifying (and artistically empty) shots and sequences are only given weight by the unsettling subject matter. A strange experience in unexpected ways, unsuccessful as a definitive documentary on the subject, but successful as an experimental interpretation of some bad times for everyone involved. Rent it if you’re adventurous, though the last thing it will do is gross you out.

Is this based on the bestiality club incident in the Northwest a few years ago where a man died?

Yeah, this happened in washington (where there are no laws outlawing bestiality), the poor guy got a ruptured colon and didn’t even feel it until a few hours before he died. No names are given in the documentary, just creepy online aliases like “Mr. Hands” and “The Happy Horseman”
