I am in the planning stages of writing a book on roadside memorials, and I will be focusing solely on the memorials – Descansos – of people who died as a result of alcohol-related accidents. This book will be quite comprehensive in that it will include interviews with as many people as I can find – the affected family and friends, the survivors and/or the person responsible for the accident (even if that person is in jail), and a brief life story of the deceased. I will also include many black and white photographs – of the memorial itself, of the families, of the person who died….perhaps even of the scene of the accident, if the survivors are willing. There will be a brief history of the Descansos themselves, as a forward. My goal is to have a book for each of the 50 states, and to have them in every middle and high school in the U.S. I will begin in the state of Florida, as that is where I live, and will proceed from there, one state at a time. I plan to self-publish, and I am writing to you at this time to ask if there are any grants for something like this. I am a full-time pediatric Hospice nurse, which is my calling, but I would like to focus on this project to the exclusion of all else, and for that I will need funding. I lost my brother in similar fashion, on the railroad .. and spent many days, weeks even, searching the scene (and official reports) for evidence and clarity, and I suppose, connection to those last moments.
