In spanish we have a saying "Better than owning a sailboat is having a friend with a sailboat" ("mejor que tener un barco es tener un amigo con un barco"). This post has shed light over that and the colouring ("coloring" for you americans) of churbuck.com's favicon.

Nice post... my arms are in pain only to think about all that sanding.

David -

It was delightful to read about your work on the boat. I remember the term "holidays" myself with a smile. I miss those days of my youth when I would spend summers at the Crosby boatyard and watch Max and my cousins build boats out of wood.

David,

Excellent post - thanks for sharing a bit of what you do in your down time, when your not punishing yourself on the erg. I love all the unique boat terminology you manange to weave into your text. It has a certain flavor to it that is far more palatable, than if I were to take my readers through the intricacies of gerotor hydraulic pump.

Embeded nails in the original construction would be, admittedly very difficult to replace all at once. If there are residual iron brackets, could they be replaced with stainless replicas? On your epoxy process, have you considered (blasphomy I know) lightweight polyester resin fillers (the ubiquitous "bondo")? If so, I might suggest the fiberglass strand fortified versions. They are hard as rock, very strong, and will not rot. The fiberglass fortified versions appear to contain more resin, so will be less likely to absorb moisture.

I helped my father put his Daysailer in this past weekend. Fiberglass is easy. The skiff is unique and full of character, but being made of wood requires that owning one must be a labor of love.

Happy sailing

[...] One man’s fun is another man’s noxious torture Published June 26th, 2007 Blogging , Sports I must point out D Churbuck’s annual rite of boat-cleaning and boat-painting. Fascinating. Though it sounds about as much fun as hunching over a chessboard for 36 hours on a sunny summer weekend. (– Oh. Scratch that. Sounds much less fun.) [...]
