I am a skinny 39 year-old Lubavitcher Chassid and I pulled 10,432m in my first crack at the hour-of-power. Good luck with your job transition. All the Best. Ben-Zion Wasserman MD.

Great work! I do my "Hour of Power" on Saturdays and target the 15000m keeping the rate under 24s/m. Last night I had a 30min erg test capped at 20s/m - it was more mentally draining then physically. I cracked 8000m so I was happy.
Keep up the oarsome effort!

As somebody who cannot break a 2:07 average over 60' to save his life, hats off! I aspire to get to where you're at someday. Since I've got the erg hooked up to a computer (for RowPro), I usually just watch a chunk of a movie for the hour, which is probably one of the reasons I'm a bit slow, but the idea of going without any distraction for 60 minutes straight is harrowing.

Great idea. There is a program -- RowPro -- which runs on a PC attached to the ethernet port on the Erg. One race virtually against competitors anywhere with that software. One can also create pace boats and race those, but it isn't as fun.

I predict indoor rowing will become an Olympic event someday.

David,

You indicated you can compete online. I note some fitness equipment like my stair climber has built in networking so that it can be connected to other units at the gym and support the group race mode. I believe you said your erg does the same.

Maybe there is a new market to hook these up to a playstation or a wii and set in front of your TV (preferably big screen / plasma) and do virtual rowing where you could see the competitors in other boats from your point of view. Ideally, you would be in the lead, so you would see them all in perspective, in your wake.

The beauty of 'zen sports' rowing, biking, blading, cross country & skate skiing, running etc., is the self examination process; asking questions of yourself, that you don't necessarily want answered. Back in the eighties when I was rowing around Lk Washington for 2 hours a day, six days a week, nine months a year, for 4 years @ Univ Wa.; the breathtaking scenery was a momentary escape form the cruel arithmetic of the daily self administered test. We'd joke afterwards about the little man standing on your shoulder whispering in your ear, saying "You're tired. Relax. No-one's looking at your puddle." All you had to do was whisper "tired" & the whole boat would rock a bit while cruising 6 inches above the cool Northwest waters, w/ the exertion & attempt @ concentration after the silly word was whispered. After practice we's be in convulsions of laughter while Dick Erickson blew pipe smoke in our faces wanting to know what the hell was so comical. When I drive to work @ 4:45 in the morning I look @ the lake on cold December days & feel good about passing all those old exams. The new tests aren't as fun, but still give heart while the heart still has something to give. EMFBO Brother
