My organization has an ethics policy for its employees, but doesn't isolate blogging or involvement on social networks. I decided the best thing to do was to tell my manager that I was active in on-line publishing and social networks. Though I don't blog about the company, I do blog about Web strategy and knowledge management, which are components of my job.

I feel it's better to be transparent about my on-line activities. It removes the element of surprise for the manager, and opens an opportunity to talk about what on-line employee activity outside the organization may mean.

[...] David Churbuck (whose name I finally got right) is a web strategist at Lenonvo computers, and writes a compelling piece Does Your Company Have a Blogging Policy? This is a question I hear to often from the Fortune 5000 who are toe dipping, or just down right scared of employee blogs. [...]

i honestly don't know if we have a policy. I guess I need to find out now...especially since I sent your Ad Network post to half the company this morning.
